My suggestion: Don’t use genkernel. Configure your kernel yourself. It produces a much better kernel and is actually fairly simple.

Also, you will want to have some knowledge with a UNIX shell. The second link should be sufficient.

If you have any problems, a good place to get help is the Gentoo Forums.

Be sure to read a lot of the info in the Gentoo Docs. They’ll teach you to set up X, KDE or GNOME, and several other things.

The Gentoo Wiki has plenty of information as well.
