Apple’s latest Mac OS X 10.7.3 release is a pain for some users due to its bugs surrounding CUI issues and the crashing of applications. Apple has already been investigating the issues with test groups, and it has apparently decided that the best thing to do at this point is remove the standard 10.7.3 update from its servers and provide users with the ability to only download the combined installation. This combo installer is not riddled with the CUI and app crashing errors as explained in our report from yesterday. Read on for all of the details:

Apple removed its online download page for the standard (client) 10.7.3 download, and now that website forwards to the combo download link. In addition, clicking a saved link that directly downloads the standard 10.7.3 installation puts up an Apple 404 page. On top of this, Apple removed the ability to download 10.7.3 (client) directly from software update, and it is now providing users with the combo installation. This combined installer is typically a few hundred megabytes larger than the standard installer, but users will not face the annoying bugs. This new build is reportedly showing up as “11D50b” instead of the client’s “11D50″ labeling.

Users who installed the client 10.7.3 download will need to manually download the combined update from Apple’s website.

Flashlights are so 20th Century. Be it the incandescent type that popped up very early on, or LED models with came around in the 90′s, there’s not much excitement to the devices. But [Sriranjan Rasakatla] is doing his best to change that. This is his WAY-GO Torch, an intelligent flashlight (a Smart Light?) that will not just light your path, but overlay useful data on it.

At the front of the unit a pico projector is housed on a jointed assembly. This allows the device to project data on the ground in front of you. Using a digital compass and GPS module, it can show the polar coordinates, guide you on your way, or provide information about the buildings around you. The motorized mount provides image stabilization based on IMU data. Check out the demonstration video after the break. It shows general functionality in the first part of the clip, with some footage of the stabilization system at about 4:30.

This really does seem like it came right out of a Sci-Fi novel. It’s useful, but the complexity makes it surprising that [Sriranjan] was able to pull it off. We wonder how the battery life is on the device, but it can’t be any worse that one of those really huge flashlight builds.

Not unlike the situation Nintendo was faced with in the months after the launch of the 3DS, there has been talk of doom and gloom regarding the Vita. Sales of the new handheld have not been particularly mind-blowing in Japan since launch, and Sony has not attempted to portray its launch as anything it is not. More importantly, it has not yet begun to panic — and nor should it.

After 325,000 units were sold in its opening week, Vita sales in Japan have declined week-over-week more often than not. 3DS, PlayStation 3, and even the PlayStation Portable have routinely outsold it, although this finally changed last week when the Vita sold almost 3,000 units more than the PSP. Still, that’s nothing to write home about, which is perhaps why Sony CFO Masaru Kato didn’t go as far as it seemed he was going to when describing Vita’s sales.

“Now the company has not publicly announced the units of shipping and sales. At the appropriate time, we would do so,” Kato said during an earnings call this week, Eurogamer reports. “But as far as sell-through, three weeks have passed and our sell-through is 500,000. This was announced on the 10th of January. So as a start, I think we had a very — a good start.”

“Including software and hardware, we are carrying out the sales promotions and we do it to boost the sales, and we do not think we have any problems,” he added.

PlayStation Portable was a much larger success in Japan than in other markets around the world, and that was due in large part to the availability of Monster Hunter. As of yet Vita has neither a Monster Hunter nor anything even beginning to approach that level of popularity to drive hardware sales in Japan. The biggest launch title in the west is almost undoubtedly Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Although Uncharted 3 did do a great deal better than its predecessors in Japan (selling 124,989 units in its first week according to Media Create), Golden Abyss wasn’t about to sell a great deal of Japanese gamers on an expensive new piece of hardware no matter how good it looks.

A French Sony exec reportedly stated recently that a Monster Hunter game is due out for Vita sometime this year. If true that would be a major boon for the platform, just as the announcement of Monster Hunter 3G (pictured above) and Monster Hunter 4 were for the 3DS last year.

Just because there is no point in worrying about Vita sales in Japan until the system fails to sell with a game like Monster Hunter available, that does not mean there are no matters that should concern Sony. Among them is a problem Nintendo will be faced with when trying to sell the Wii U, and that is the concerns of early adopters who fear Vita will get a 3DS-style price drop shortly after release. It’s a problem for Nintendo because it’s already shown its willingness to drop the price of new hardware if deemed necessary, and it’s a problem for Sony because it, like Nintendo, is launching portable hardware for $ 250 (or more, in the 3G system’s case) in a market rife with competition from iPads and iPhones and iPod Touches that did not exist when the PSP was launched.

The truly devoted fans of Sony and those who can’t stand to live without a new piece of hardware will buy a Vita on February 22; there’s no doubting that. Others may not be able to so easily look past worries that the Vita’s price could be dropped if early sales figures disappoint. I could not resist the urge to pre-order a Vita following the announcement of the Launch Bundle last week. I do, however, remain unconvinced I need one badly enough at launch to forgo the opportunity of getting one for less money six months down the line.

Another area of concern for prospective buyers is the sour taste that may still be lingering from Sony’s most recent PSP iteration, the PSP Go. (The PAL-only, budget E-1000 model doesn’t count.) I’m fairly confident Sony has learned its lessons from the Go, but not everyone who bought one is necessarily so forgiving. After paying a premium for the Go its owners were faced with paying as much as, if not more than retail prices for games, not all of which were available through the PlayStation Store — the only place to get games on a Go.

We should have a clearer idea in the next few months whether the memories of these things will impact consumers’ interest in the system. With such a strong launch lineup, particularly compared with that of the 3DS, the Vita has a lot going in its favor. But should the system struggle, it will be quite the dilemma for Sony to deal with knowing that quickly dropping the Vita’s price could make it more difficult to sell the eventual PlayStation 4.

Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android smartphone market share topped 47.3 percent, closing 2011 nearly 18 percentage points higher than No. 2 Apple’s iOS in the United States, according to comScore.

While Android’s share rose from 46.9 percent in November, it is iOS that finished the year on a strong note. The platform topped 29.6 percent through December, up nearly a full percentage point from 28.8 percent in November.

The growth spurt came courtesy of two and a half months of sales of the popular iPhone 4S on AT&T (NYSE:T), Verizon Wireless and Sprint (NYSE:S).

Apple reported that it sold 37 million iPhones during the holiday quarter, up from 17 million the quarter before, as the company continued to wage a market and legal battle with Samsung. The top Android OEM shipped 36 million smartphone units, up from 28 million the quarter before, according to market research firm IHS iSuppli.

In third place, Research In Motion’s (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry platform continued its slide, ending 2011 with 16 percent share, down from nearly 20 percent in August. The company is betting on its BlackBerry 10 operating system to help sell more phones.

However, Jefferies and Co. analyst Peter Misek said new RIM CEO Thorsten Heins is likely to move away from its alleged plans to license BB10 to Samsung and launch new BlackBerry messaging, email and social networking applications for iOS and Android platforms for a monthly fee.

“We believe decelerating efforts to offer enterprises the ability to get their fast secure Blackberry e-mail on an iPhone or an Android device is a mistake,” Misek wrote in a Feb. 3 note to clients.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Mobile/Phone market share also continued to slide.

Windows Mobile/Phone capped 2011 with 4.7 percent market share in the U.S., down from 5.2 percent in November and 5.7 percent share in August 2011. However, the company’s Windows Phone 7 appears to be trending up on new Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Lumia phones.

The Lumia 900 in particular wowed watchers at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. It is widely expected Windows Phone will become the No. 3 smartphone platform behind Android and iOS in the next couple years.

Overall, smartphone penetration continued its ascendance through the end of 2011. comScore counted about 98 million smartphone users in the U.S. through December, accounting for 40 percent of all U.S. mobile users, and up from 91.4 percent in November.

Question by JustinC: What is the best database software / programme for a small company with huge product portfolio?
Hello everyone,

I work for a trading company that sells a wide range of product. We are looking into the possibility to upgrade our database and we have reserve a small budget for it.

Our companies has 15 major production lines that offer over 2000 types of product. Each production line has its own pricing programme and very often we offer special prices for our clients. Therefore we are looking for a user-friendly system that allows us to manage and modify (NOT just store) a huge amount of data, including production info, supplier info, customer info.

We are using MS Excel files as our database and we have wasted too much time on copying data from one file to another.
Below are my concerns for some database software that i know of:
Access – My colleagues do not have much access knowledge –> hard to manage? Long time to build the database?
MySQL – Too technical and powerful for a small company?
QuickBooks – Dunno much abt it, any opinion?

Any advice is welcome! Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Jewel D
sql server 2005 – express will provide you with 4GB database space… and its free… should you need more space… you could opt for 2 database instances or you could upgrade to the fully fledged product…what could be better – a free great product – by microsoft?
